Tall Tale Tuesday: The Jersey Devil

You have to give major props to a myth that can penetrate the culture so much so that it has its own NHL team. What? You thought the New Jersey Devils were named after Satan? He should be so lucky.

First showing up on the 1800′s, the Jersey Devil has been credited with killing livestock, leaving tracks, and even making strange noises in the night. In the middle of the 20th century, merchants around Camden, New Jersey, offered $10,000 to anyone who could capture the creature, and even offered to build a private zoo for J.D.

Alas, the reward went uncollected.

While you may have your doubts, I can’t help but think that there has to be some amount of truth to the existence of the Jersey Devil. I mean, it’s been talked about for so long, reportedly been sighted, and with some degree of evidence being left behind, it’s hard not to imagine the possibility that a strange creature could be inhabiting the Pine Barrens. No?

As far as pop culture goes, I mentioned the NHL team, but the mysterious creature has also found its way into episodes of The X-Files, Animal Planet, Scariest Places on Earth, Paranormal State, and Destination Truth. Hell, Bruce Springsteen even wrote a song about it. A Night With the Jersey Devil, anyone? Its been featured in video games, in pro wrestling, and also has a motorcycle club named after it.
